Is a Diesel Oil Change Different from a Conventional Oil Change?

The diesel engine's oil change process is very similar to that of a gasoline-powered engine, but the oil itself is different. While most conventional oil has additives, diesel oil has a much higher level of detergent additives designed to keep the engine cleaner. It also has extra anti-wear agents like ZDDP, and its viscosity tends to be higher. This oil has been specifically formulated to keep diesel engines well lubricated. If you were to use this oil in a gasoline-powered engine, you’d run into troubles. For one thing, diesel engines have specially designed catalytic converters that are built to handle the anti-wear agents; the catalytic converter in a gasoline-powered car might not be able to handle the level of ZDDP.

How Often Does My VW Need a Diesel Oil Change?

Diesel engines can generally go longer between oil changes than gas engines. While a gas-powered engine should have its oil changed about every 3,000 miles (if you’re using conventional oil), diesel engines can last up to 10,000 miles. But that’s not always a hard and fast rule, so it’s a good idea to check with a service advisor first. How much idling your vehicle does, the type of driving you do, and the weather can all affect how often you should get a diesel oil change.
