What We Know So Far About the EV Transition Plan from Volkswagen

How VW Plans to Usher in the Current and Future Generations of Electric Vehicles

The age of electric vehicles is upon us, and we see that more and more with each passing year as more EVs are released and more people make "the switch" – the official conversion from fuel-based vehicles to battery. According to the most recent data, more people are making the switch over to EVs than ever. In fact, registrations for electric vehicles increased by 60 percent in the first quarter of 2022. So, what exactly is driving these conversions? And how are automobile manufacturers laying out their EV transition to accommodate drivers? Let’s break this down.

What’s Driving Electric Vehicle Popularity?

First, the quality and performance of modern electric vehicles far surpasses the ones coming out even as recently as five years ago. They have amazing feature packages, appealing interior and exterior design, and tout single-charge ranges that rival a full tank of gas. For instance, the VW ID.4 (Pro model) can get up to 275 miles on a single charge, which is more than enough mileage to make it through your weekly commuting and regular errands. Another thing that's driving the transition over to electric vehicles is the cost of ownership. Electric vehicles are finally affordable and more in line with what the average car buyer is willing to spend. It also doesn't hurt that owning an electric vehicle means that drivers will never have to spend a single cent on gasoline ever again. As people learned over the summer, an unfavorable influx in gas prices can wreak havoc on a family's monthly budget. Those who were fortunate enough to own an electric vehicle were able to avoid that issue. Those who didn’t gave some serious thought about new electric cars and how they might save them money at the pump. Electric vehicles have successfully become a major part of the overall vehicle market, and car manufacturers know that slice of the proverbial pie will continue to grow, especially with incentives like the $7,500 tax credit per the Inflation Reduction Act.

What Plans Does Volkswagen Have Regarding EV Transition?

Currently, Volkswagen only has one electric vehicle in their entire lineup – the VW ID.4. However, things are going to be changing in the very near future. One of the first things that VW will do is offer a wider variety of electric vehicles. This will include the VW ID.LIFE, the VW ID.Buzz, the VW ID.Aero, and the VW ID.8. In addition to the offering of all-electric SUVs, they will be adding a microbus and a luxury sedan into the mix. The commitment to electric vehicle production was recently confirmed by Oliver Blume, new CEO of the Volkswagen Group. When Herbert Diess vacated the CEO position, there was some speculation that VW may not be as “full steam ahead” on the EV path as they once were. Blume laid that rumor to rest on day one. Blume was quoted, saying, "I am a fan of e-mobility and I stand by this path…we will keep the current pace and, where possible, increase it." Blume has also gone on record saying that he intends to increase the amount of VW EVs in circulation and fix the supply chain issues that are causing shipping delays. One big move that was recently made was the shift in manufacturing of the VW ID.4 from overseas to a domestic plant located in Chattanooga, TN. Not only does this fix the supply chain issue problem, but it also ensures that drivers will be eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. Based on what Blume is saying and the scheduled release of a wider variety of electric vehicles from VW, drivers can expect Volkswagen to remain committed to the path of eco-friendly vehicles. They can also expect current vehicles – like the VW Tiguan – to be offered in all-electric versions.

6 Things to Know About the VW ID.3

Getting to Know This New All-Electric Volkswagen Vehicle When Volkswagen released their first electric vehicle for sale – the award-winning VW ID.4 – the plan was always that it would be one of many EVs. Now that a few years have gone by, the picture has become clearer as to what the automaker has in store for drivers who are thinking about making the switch. The VW ID.Life is an upcoming all-electric subcompact SUV that should make its way over to the states by 2025. The VW ID. Buzz is the first all-electric van from the automaker, which will start making its way onto dealership lots by next year. Additionally, VW will also have an all-electric sedan known as the ID. AERO. Rounding out the list of new EV releases is the Volkswagen ID.3 for sale. The following are the top six things you should know about the VW ID.3. #1 – The VW ID.3 Made its Debut in 2016 Chances are you’re hearing about the VW ID.3 for the first time today; however, it may surprise you to know that this concept first showed its all-electric face all the way back in 2016 at the Paris Motor Show. At that point in time, it was being touted as the very first model in the ID sub-brand. #2 – The VW ID.3 Uses the MEB Platform The Modular Electric Drive matrix (MEB, for short) enables electric vehicles of all shapes and sizes to be built using an adjustable battery system at the foundation. It just so happens that the VW ID.3 was the very first to use the now-famous MEB platform. #3 – The VW ID.3 Aims to Elevate the Hot Hatchback Lineup The VW Golf GTI is the resident hot hatchback in the Volkswagen lineup of vehicles. The VW ID.3 aims to carry on the tradition of small and speedy whips with an electric version of the four-door hatchback, providing drivers with an estimated 200 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque. #4 – Trim Level Will Dictate Driving Distance There’s always one big question when talking about an electric car for sale – what’s the max driving range? Regarding the Volkswagen ID.3 for sale, that’s entirely dependent on what trim level the driver selects. The ranges break down as follows: ID.3 Pure Performance – 216 miles ID.3 Pro – 264 miles ID.3 Pro Performance – 264 miles ID.3 Pro S – 341 miles #5 – The VW ID.3 Has Already Won an Award In January of 2021, the VW ID.3 won the “Small Electric Car of the Year” from What Car? magazine, which is a British publication. #6 – The VW ID.3 May Not See a North American Release Currently, there are no plans for the VW ID.3 to roll-out in America; however, that isn’t to say we won’t get some form of an electric hatchback in the coming years. Remember, VW is releasing an EV van, sedan, and SUV in the immediate future. It only makes sense a hatchback would eventually be tacked on to that list. If you happen to be a current owner of a 2021 or 2022 model year VW ID.4, then you’ll want to pay attention to this next part. Volkswagen recently announced that the earliest models of the VW ID.4 have a software update that drivers need to get installed. The following section breaks down how to do it and what changes to expect. How VW Is Rolling Out the ID.4 Software Update and What to Expect There are a couple key things you need to know about the software update right out of the gate. The first is that the software update must be performed by a Volkswagen technician, which means ID.4 owners won’t be able to update remotely. The second thing is that ID.4 owners don’t need to reach out to set up an appointment. Volkswagen will be reaching out to ID.4 owners if they haven’t already been in touch. Keeping that in mind, you can expect the following changes with the software update: The ID.Cockpit digital display will be updated to show drivers additional vehicle information. Battery info will display with a percentage of how much battery is left. Additionally, the display will show the current driving mode as well as a trip computer that shows current driving data and ambient temperature. In an effort to make finding charging stations easier than ever, the software update will bring the map of Electrify America stations up to date and include new filtering and routing options. Additionally, details about each charging station, such as its charging speed, will now be provided so that drivers can easily locate DC fast chargers. A new feature called Auto Hold will be added after installing the update. Whenever the ID.4 is brought to a complete stop, the Auto Hold feature kicks in and holds the vehicle in position when pressure is removed from the brake. However, drivers who prefer the car roll forward when the brake is released can deactivate the Auto Hold feature. Ready to Check Out a VW Electric Car? Visit VW Cypress Today!
