Vehicle Inflation and the CHIPS Act

For new and used vehicles, inflation is up due to price increases on the production level and the shortage of semiconductor chips. However, the Biden administration has made a commitment to resolve the semiconductor chip shortage with the executive order to implement the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022. The act is specifically designed to rebuild domestic supply chains, manufacturing, and the infrastructure that is required to produce essential semiconductor chips for new vehicles.

What does this mean? In addition to creating domestic jobs, the CHIPS Act should get the automobile industry back on track. By extension, this should cool down inflation on new and used automobiles, although it won’t happen overnight. Experts are saying it will be a very slow process before car prices return to “normal levels” – a term that’s open to interpretation and subject to change.

LIFE are all at different phases of production. Only time will tell if they officially get released.

The same can be said for the rumors currently circling around the VW Tiguan. What’s interesting about this story is that the Tiguan is not a brand-new vehicle like the other VW electric car concepts. This would be a conversion of an existing vehicle that’s going from gas-powered to electric. From the perspective of a car manufacturer, this is a cost-effective move because it’s much easier to convert an existing vehicle than it is to build a new one from scratch. New electric cars require a significant investment.

Keeping that in mind, it does appear that VW is working on an electric version of the Tiguan. Spy photographers have captured clear photos of a Tiguan prototype that’s currently being tested. What makes people think that this version is an EV is that it doesn’t have any tail pipes and the front grill is closed off to most of the air intakes. At the very least, this new Tiguan is a hybrid, but very likely a full-on EV.

Another reason why people are sold on the rumor that the Tiguan will go electric is that there have been multiple sightings in multiple locations of this prototype. This leads us to believe that Volkswagen is seriously considering putting an all-electric VW Tiguan into production once they complete their testing and iron out the performance and design aspects.

That Tiguan could very well be one of the next VW electric cars for sale; however, considering the stage of testing that they’re at, don’t expect to see one on a car lot until at least a couple of years from now. These things take time, but good things come to those who wait.

According to Auto Week, European truck maker MAN is going to be making the transition over to electric when it comes to semi-trucks. For those not familiar, MAN is part of the Traton Group, which is owned by Volkswagen.

Roughly a year ago, MAN opened its eMobility Center at its Munich plant. According to Michael Kobriger, board member for production and logistics at MAN Truck & Bus, “We’re using the MAN eMobility Center to develop the skills needed to take our e-trucks into series production. It’s where employees at the Munich factory will be qualified in future technologies under real production conditions.”

As it stands, the goal is to have these electric semi-trucks in small-series production by 2023 followed by full-scale production by the year 2024. The truck maker spent the last year refining and improving their process assembling vehicle battery packs. These packs should yield a range of somewhere between 372 to 497 miles. The truck maker is already showing major progress having produced at least 20 different prototypes of electric semi.

MAN currently has electric buses and vans in production, but electric semi-trucks would be a huge game-changer for both MAN and VW. It would cut down on fuel budgets and be a big step toward reducing carbon emissions, which is a goal that VW is keeping top of mind.

However, there is quite a bit of work that needs to be done before the goal becomes a reality. Gas-powered trucks aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. The initial roll-out of all-electric semi-trucks will be a test to see if they have the performance capabilities to one day replace diesel-fueled semis. These electric semi-trucks will need to be road-tested extensively to see if that’s even possible.

Breaking Down the Evolution of This Game-Changing Vehicle

Every great vehicle has its humble beginnings, and the VW Golf GTI is no exception. Originally kicking off in the mid-1970s, the VW Golf GTI has set the standard for what a speedy, small compact car can do when it’s outfitted with sizable power under the hood.

Although many of the following will not be available at a Volkswagen dealership near you, it is fun to take a trip down memory lane to reminisce about some of these amazing vehicles that changed the landscape in modern driving.

1976 – VW Golf GTI (Mark 1)
The birth of a legend in the making. The VW Golf GTI hit the market with a 1.6L inline-four engine yielding 110 horsepower and speeds up to 110 mph, making it speedier than the entry-level Porsches of the day.

1985 – VW Golf GTI (Mark 2)
The second VW Golf GTI kept roughly the same design scheme, however, it was given a little boost in the performance department. The Mark 2 provided drivers with 137 horsepower with the 16-valve version.

1991 – VW Golf GTI (Mark 3)
The third generation VW Golf GTI saw some design advancements that made the vehicle sleeker and more modern. The engine also got an upgrade with a 2.0L in-line four that yielded 115 horsepower.

1997 – VW Golf GTI (Mark 4)
The VW Golf GTI Mark 4 went on to become the best-selling vehicle in Europe in 2001. Both the wheelbase and the length of the car grew slightly, and the car gained a good 200 pounds of curb weight. The Mark 4 got a lot of comparisons in the press to BMW. It was initially offered with two different engines: a 2.0L 4-cylinder and a 2.8L narrow-angle VR6 that yielded up to 174 horsepower.

2004 – VW Golf GTI (Mark 5)
It took a while, but VW finally released a brand-new Golf GTI for the new millennium in 2004. It was the first GTI to offer a 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), which earned the vehicle plenty of rave reviews from critics. The car could go from zero to 60 in 6.9 seconds when using DSG. It also had a top speed of 146 mph, officially granting it “speedy whip” status in automobile circles.

2009 – VW Golf GTI (Mark 6)
Drivers didn’t have to wait as long this time to receive the next iteration of the VW Golf GTI. The chassis development was supervised by German racing legend Hans-Joachim Stuck. The Mark 6 came with a 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder engine that yielded 210 horsepower in international markets (200 in the U.S.). This iteration of the VW Golf GTI also received a considerable facelift with a new honeycomb grille and dual exhaust at the corners of the rear bumper.

2013 – VW Golf GTI (Mark 7)
In a big change for the Volkswagen Golf GTI lineup, the Mark 7 was the first to be lighter in curb weight than its predecessors. The redesign also saw some structural redesigns to strengthen its build for better handling with significant bumps in performance. The vehicle could get up to 230 horsepower with the Performance Package model. Drivers were able to hit 60 mph in just 6.4 seconds. The Mark 7 would see several different facelifts during its reign as king of the compact vehicles in the VW stable.

2021 – VW Golf GTI (Mark 8)
The most recent form for the VW Golf GTI is offered as a four-door hatchback for the first time in its illustrious history.
