And How to Find a New Volkswagen for Sale at a VW Dealership in Houston
When it comes to long distance travel, flying is usually the default option for most people. If you’re traveling to Los Angeles, New York City, or Chicago from Houston, getting on a plane makes sense because it’s the fastest way to get from point A to point B.
However, there are those trips that are short enough in distance where driving is comparable to flying. The airlines refer to these as short-haul flights, which means the flight lasts less than three hours. As a traveler, you need to weigh your options on driving versus flying. There’s a lot that can go wrong when dealing with airlines.
Your flight may be late or outright canceled. Your flight may be overbooked. Or perhaps you wind up in a cramped middle seat for the better part of three hours. No matter which way you slice it, flying is usually a stressful experience, which is exactly why Volkswagen is doing something about it.
For those who value comfort over speed, VW is cooking up the next generation in automated travel – aptly named the Volkswagen Gen.Travel concept. Let’s dive into how it aims to change the landscape of long-distance travel – and why it matters for VW cars.
Replacing Flights with Autonomous Travel by Volkswagen
Unless you’re flying privately, there’s no scenario where you park your car, board a plane, and immediately take off. Getting on a plane is a process, and normally not a speedy or pleasant one. In fact, it’s recommended that passengers arrive at the airport two hours in advance before their flight is scheduled to take off.
Additionally, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics reports that approximately 20 percent of flights were delayed in 2022. Flying is only fast when it’s efficient, and the airlines have long been an example of an industry rife with mistakes. This issue seems to magnify when it matters most – the holidays.
So, how exactly is Volkswagen addressing this issue with their Gen.Travel concept? The idea is that this autonomous vehicle will one day replace short-haul flights by offering a more convenient alternative. The VW Gen.Travel concept isn’t actively controlled by a driver. Using Level 5 autonomous driving technology, the vehicle is capable of transporting passengers over long distances in the futuristic and comfortable confines of its cabin.
The Volkswagen Gen.Travel concept can travel about 300 miles before it needs a charge – which it can do on its own – and features all sorts of amenities for those who wish to relax. The seats fully lay out to become a bed and the windows can be dimmed to reduce sunlight, which makes the Gen.Travel concept the closest thing to a mobile sleep pod that we’ve seen yet.
However, for the avid employee who likes to be productive on the road, the Gen.Travel concept features plenty of workspace for laptops, tablets, or a good old fashioned legal pad. Seating up to four passengers, the Gen.Travel is perfect for mobile work and collaboration. It has one of the roomiest cabins ever created for a vehicle – autonomous or otherwise.
The one roadblock with the Gen.Travel is that is still requires further testing to establish proof of concept and a track record of safety, so it will be more than a few years before you see one in the U.S. Until then, you can count on the VW dealership in Houston for all your automotive needs – including the latest releases that prove Volkswagen is poised to be on the cutting-edge of road travel through the development of spectacular vehicles, like the ID. 4, Jetta GLI, Tiguan, and Atlas Cross Sport.
