Eco-Friendly Changes Coming to the Volkswagen ID.4 and Other VW Electric Vehicles

The United States is aiming to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Although this is a lofty goal, environmentalists project that it’s possible through a series of systemic changes that will impact multiple sectors, including energy, construction, heavy industry, and, of course, transportation.

Some of the major changes include:

  • Replacing coal-fired power units with energy-efficient electric power units
  • Shifting building power sources from gas to electricity
  • Shifting the power sources used in industrial production to hydrogen and electricity
  • Reusing old materials to create new materials
  • Creating policies that incentivize energy-efficient changes for companies and individuals
  • Implementing an electric vehicle sales requirement
  • Implementing new efficiency standards for airplanes

Although doing this won’t completely eliminate carbon emissions, it will get us close enough to the goal that the remaining emissions will be neutralized by forests and other naturally occurring elements. However, each sector and company within those sectors must do their part, as this is a group effort. This brings us to the topic of Volkswagen, and how they are increasing the sustainability of their electric vehicles.

Sustainability Facts to Know About the Volkswagen ID.4 and Other VW EVs

There are several benefits that apply to all electric vehicles that consumers are already taking advantage of. First, they cost less to operate than traditional vehicles. For instance, they require no oil changes and far fewer brake replacements. They also provide the convenience of at-home charging. Most importantly, EVs produce no emissions, which make them the most eco-friendly vehicle option.

When the Volkswagen ID.4 debuted in the latter part of 2020, it marked the first time that the German automaker ever released an electric vehicle in the United States. Not only did the Volkswagen ID.4 become one of the best-selling vehicles from VW, but it also claimed the 2021 World Car of the Year Award. Introducing a sustainable EV option ended up being a big hit with drivers and reviewers alike.

Fast-forward to now, and the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S along with other models from the Volkswagen ID lineup intend to continue the tradition of eco-friendliness by upping the ante. Volkswagen is planning to use recycled materials to make portions of their EV interiors, thus, improving upon their sustainability. Here are the details that we know so far about the upcoming changes to the Volkswagen ID lineup:

  • These changes will impact the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, and the ID.7. However, more vehicles may be added to this lineup.
  • Different recycled/sustainable materials will be used for seating surfaces and headliners. They include Seaqual yarn, ArtVelours Eco, and recycled polyester.
  • Liquid paint that resembles chrome will be used as a replacement for chrome.
  • Polyethylene terephthalate bottles and plastic recovered from the ocean will make up various underbody and interior components and pieces.
  • The goal for Volkswagen is to reduce carbon emissions by 40% by 2030.

Of course, this begs the question, “Will these recycled/sustainable materials be a suitable replacement for the conventional materials they’ve been using thus far?” Obviously, drivers don’t want to buy a Volkswagen ID vehicle only to have it degrade and deteriorate.

A spokesperson for VW went on record saying that maintaining quality standards is why only some of the parts of these vehicles are being replaced rather than all of them. The reused materials should offer the same look, feel, and durability as the traditional ones. Those that are deemed substandard won’t be cleared for production models of the Volkswagen ID vehicles.

Find Your Favorite by Taking a Test Drive at a Volkswagen Dealership in Houston

If you’ve been SUV shopping in the past decade, then you already know what a challenge it can be. Every automaker has at least a few different SUVs in their lineups, and each one has its own distinguishing qualities that set it apart from the pack.

However, what those qualities are isn’t always obvious upon first (or even second) glance. The challenge of picking out the perfect SUV is even more difficult when two of the vehicles share the same name.

Indeed, your local Volkswagen dealership in Houston is home to several VW SUVs, and yes, some of them do share the same namesake. To help paint a clearer picture of the VW SUVs near you for sale, we’re breaking down every single one along with what makes them distinct, and why you’d want one.

2023 VW Atlas – The Biggest of the Bunch

Starting off our list of Volkswagen SUVs is our resident tank – the VW Atlas. If you’re looking for the largest VW SUV near you, then look no further than this one. In addition to being able to comfortably seat seven people in its cabin, the Atlas offers up to 96.8 cubic feet of storage (with seats folded down). This super-sized, ultra-powerful SUV can be yours for a starting MSRP of just $35,150.

2023 VW Atlas Cross Sport – The Resident Off-Roader

Whereas the VW Atlas is known for its storage and seating capacity, the slightly scaled-down VW Atlas Cross Sport is known for its sporty handling and thirst for adventure. It delivers the same 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque that the Atlas does, but its reduced size makes it a bit lighter on its proverbial feet. The Atlas Cross Sport with 4MOTION® with Active Control has four different driving modes. Turn the dial to off-road mode to see what the Atlas Cross Sport can do on muddy trails. This sporty companion on wheels has a starting MSRP of just $34,460.

2023 VW Taos – Small in Size and Low in Cost of Ownership

We’ve covered our largest SUVs. Now let’s go small. The VW Taos is the perfect SUV for someone who wants to upscale from a sedan but doesn’t want all the bulk of a standard Volkswagen SUV. Like a sedan, the Taos is nimble and agile, while also offering a decent amount of cargo room. However, where the Taos really excels is in cost of ownership. This new Volkswagen for sale has a starting MSRP of just $24,155, making it the least expensive Volkswagen SUV in the lineup.

2023 VW Tiguan – The Top-Rated Safety Pick

The VW Tiguan is one of the longest-running Volkswagen SUV models in the catalog of vehicles. For nearly 15 years, the Tiguan has been a best-seller because it checks all the boxes when it comes to storage, price, features, seating capacity, and quality of drive. With a starting MSRP of just $26,950, it’s only slightly more expensive than the VW Taos. It’s also packed to the gills with safety features, and recently earned the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

2023 VW ID.4 – The All-Electric Option

When it originally hit the market, the VW ID.4 immediately made waves as one of the best EV SUVs. In fact, it was named the 2021 World Car of the Year. The 2023 model aims to continue with that winning tradition. Able to drive up to 275 miles on a single charge, this Volkswagen SUV provides more than enough distance to get you through the work week in style. With a starting MSRP of just $38,995, the ID.4 is one of the most competitively priced electric SUVs on the market. Contact us today to learn how you can get a $7,500 lease credit.

And Where to Find the Volkswagen ID. Buzz for Sale Near You in Houston

Up until now, the VW ID.4 has been the resident star of the show in the Volkswagen EV lineup of vehicles, and it’s not as if it hasn’t earned it. This VW electric vehicle has been raking in recognition ever since it debuted just a few short years ago.

The Volkswagen ID.4 was the winner of the 2021 World Car of the Year Award and was named one of Wards 10 Best User Experiences. It’s also made its way onto several editors’ choice lists. To say that VW hit it out of the park with their first North American electric effort would be a massive understatement.

However, the plan for Volkswagen was always to go bigger and better with their electric vehicles. Keeping that in mind, let’s get to know a little bit more about the newest upcoming Volkswagen electric car – the VW ID. Buzz.

The VW ID. Buzz – Main Performance Specs and Overview

Longtime fans of the VW brand will notice the VW ID. Buzz is based upon the VW Type 2 Microbus from a few decades ago. Back in those days, it was a large capacity vehicle used for shipping cargo. It was also used for those who needed to seat a lot of passengers in one vehicle. Remember, the first SUVs weren’t released until the mid-80s, so the Microbus was the perfect family van.

For this new iteration, the VW ID. Buzz plans to carry on the tradition of being the go-to option for those with a large family dynamic. Drivers will have plenty of room for passengers and cargo; the Buzz offers up to 77.9 cubic feet of storage with the seats folded down.

Additionally, the new VW EV can drive up to 264 miles on a single charge, which puts it right around what the VW ID.4 can do. Drivers will have 229 lb-ft of torque and 201 horsepower when driving the new Buzz. However, the most impressive part about this VW electric vehicle is how it ranks in safety.

The VW ID. Buzz – A Top Ranked Safety Pick

Crash statistics are a metric that every automaker should be mindful of, which is why VW has pulled out all the stops when outfitting the VW ID. Buzz with every bell and whistle in the book when it comes to safety.

The VW ID. Buzz will come with a full suite of safety and intelligent driver assistance features that ensure drivers are always notified of nearby hazards, even when they’re not actively looking for them. Some of the top features include:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Active blind spot monitor
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane assist
  • Travel assist
  • Front assist
  • Emergency assist

The comprehensive safety feature package has earned the VW ID. Buzz high scores with the European New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) in the areas of accident-avoidance technology, occupant protection, and collision testing. Its five-star rating that it received from the NCAP officially makes it the safest bus ever.

So, where can you find the Volkswagen ID. Buzz for sale near you? You’ll have to be patient. The VW ID. Buzz isn’t due to go on sale until next year in 2024. Until then, VW Cypress can set you up with a different kind of VW electric vehicle or even a traditional vehicle.

Getting to Know This New All-Electric Volkswagen Vehicle

When Volkswagen released their first electric vehicle for sale – the award-winning VW ID.4 – the plan was always that it would be one of many EVs. Now that a few years have gone by, the picture has become clearer as to what the automaker has in store for drivers who are thinking about making the switch.

The VW ID.Life is an upcoming all-electric subcompact SUV that should make its way over to the states by 2025. The VW ID. Buzz is the first all-electric van from the automaker, which will start making its way onto dealership lots by next year. Additionally, VW will also have an all-electric sedan known as the ID. AERO.

Rounding out the list of new EV releases is the Volkswagen ID.3 for sale. The following are the top six things you should know about the VW ID.3.

#1 – The VW ID.3 Made its Debut in 2016

Chances are you’re hearing about the VW ID.3 for the first time today; however, it may surprise you to know that this concept first showed its all-electric face all the way back in 2016 at the Paris Motor Show. At that point in time, it was being touted as the very first model in the ID sub-brand.

#2 – The VW ID.3 Uses the MEB Platform

The Modular Electric Drive matrix (MEB, for short) enables electric vehicles of all shapes and sizes to be built using an adjustable battery system at the foundation. It just so happens that the VW ID.3 was the very first to use the now-famous MEB platform.

#3 – The VW ID.3 Aims to Elevate the Hot Hatchback Lineup

The VW Golf GTI is the resident hot hatchback in the Volkswagen lineup of vehicles. The VW ID.3 aims to carry on the tradition of small and speedy whips with an electric version of the four-door hatchback, providing drivers with an estimated 200 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque.

#4 – Trim Level Will Dictate Driving Distance

There’s always one big question when talking about an electric car for sale – what’s the max driving range? Regarding the Volkswagen ID.3 for sale, that’s entirely dependent on what trim level the driver selects. The ranges break down as follows:

  • ID.3 Pure Performance – 216 miles
  • ID.3 Pro – 264 miles
  • ID.3 Pro Performance – 264 miles
  • ID.3 Pro S – 341 miles

#5 – The VW ID.3 Has Already Won an Award

In January of 2021, the VW ID.3 won the “Small Electric Car of the Year” from What Car? magazine, which is a British publication.

#6 – The VW ID.3 May Not See a North American Release

Currently, there are no plans for the VW ID.3 to roll-out in America; however, that isn’t to say we won’t get some form of an electric hatchback in the coming years. Remember, VW is releasing an EV van, sedan, and SUV in the immediate future. It only makes sense a hatchback would eventually be tacked on to that list.

Finding an Electric Car for Sale at a Volkswagen Dealership in Houston

Although you won’t be able to find the VW ID.3 here at VW Cypress, we do carry the all-electric VW ID.4. And How to Find a New Volkswagen for Sale at a VW Dealership in Houston

When it comes to long distance travel, flying is usually the default option for most people. If you’re traveling to Los Angeles, New York City, or Chicago from Houston, getting on a plane makes sense because it’s the fastest way to get from point A to point B.

However, there are those trips that are short enough in distance where driving is comparable to flying. The airlines refer to these as short-haul flights, which means the flight lasts less than three hours. As a traveler, you need to weigh your options on driving versus flying. There’s a lot that can go wrong when dealing with airlines.

Your flight may be late or outright canceled. Your flight may be overbooked. Or perhaps you wind up in a cramped middle seat for the better part of three hours. No matter which way you slice it, flying is usually a stressful experience, which is exactly why Volkswagen is doing something about it.

For those who value comfort over speed, VW is cooking up the next generation in automated travel – aptly named the Volkswagen Gen.Travel concept. Let’s dive into how it aims to change the landscape of long-distance travel – and why it matters for VW cars.

Replacing Flights with Autonomous Travel by Volkswagen

Unless you’re flying privately, there’s no scenario where you park your car, board a plane, and immediately take off. Getting on a plane is a process, and normally not a speedy or pleasant one. In fact, it’s recommended that passengers arrive at the airport two hours in advance before their flight is scheduled to take off.

Additionally, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics reports that approximately 20 percent of flights were delayed in 2022. Flying is only fast when it’s efficient, and the airlines have long been an example of an industry rife with mistakes. This issue seems to magnify when it matters most – the holidays.

So, how exactly is Volkswagen addressing this issue with their Gen.Travel concept? The idea is that this autonomous vehicle will one day replace short-haul flights by offering a more convenient alternative. The VW Gen.Travel concept isn’t actively controlled by a driver. Using Level 5 autonomous driving technology, the vehicle is capable of transporting passengers over long distances in the futuristic and comfortable confines of its cabin.

The Volkswagen Gen.Travel concept can travel about 300 miles before it needs a charge – which it can do on its own – and features all sorts of amenities for those who wish to relax. The seats fully lay out to become a bed and the windows can be dimmed to reduce sunlight, which makes the Gen.Travel concept the closest thing to a mobile sleep pod that we’ve seen yet.

However, for the avid employee who likes to be productive on the road, the Gen.Travel concept features plenty of workspace for laptops, tablets, or a good old fashioned legal pad. Seating up to four passengers, the Gen.Travel is perfect for mobile work and collaboration. It has one of the roomiest cabins ever created for a vehicle – autonomous or otherwise.

The one roadblock with the Gen.Travel is that is still requires further testing to establish proof of concept and a track record of safety, so it will be more than a few years before you see one in the U.S. Until then, you can count on the VW dealership in Houston for all your automotive needs – including the latest releases that prove Volkswagen is poised to be on the cutting-edge of road travel through the development of spectacular vehicles, like the ID. 4, Jetta GLI, Tiguan, and Atlas Cross Sport.

And How to Find a New Volkswagen ID.4 for Sale Near You in Houston

To say that the Volkswagen ID.4 is one of our best-selling vehicles is a massive understatement. Drivers love the fact that there’s finally an electric vehicle that values cost of ownership just as much as performance. In addition to getting up to 275 miles on a single charge, the VW ID.4 is stacked in the infotainment and safety features department.

The perfect blend of design, driver amenities, and performance is why the VW ID.4 was the winner of the 2021 World Car of the Year Award and named one of Wards 10 Best User Experiences. It’s the electric SUV that’s setting the tone for what an electric SUV should be, and you can check out the new Volkswagen ID.4 for sale at VW Cypress in Houston. If you happen to be a current owner of a 2021 or 2022 model year VW ID.4, then you’ll want to pay attention to this next part. Volkswagen recently announced that the earliest models of the VW ID.4 have a software update that drivers need to get installed. The following section breaks down how to do it and what changes to expect.

How VW Is Rolling Out the ID.4 Software Update and What to Expect

There are a couple key things you need to know about the software update right out of the gate. The first is that the software update must be performed by a Volkswagen technician, which means ID.4 owners won’t be able to update remotely. The second thing is that ID.4 owners don’t need to reach out to set up an appointment. Volkswagen will be reaching out to ID.4 owners if they haven’t already been in touch.

Keeping that in mind, you can expect the following changes with the software update:

  • The ID.Cockpit digital display will be updated to show drivers additional vehicle information. Battery info will display with a percentage of how much battery is left. Additionally, the display will show the current driving mode as well as a trip computer that shows current driving data and ambient temperature.
  • In an effort to make finding charging stations easier than ever, the software update will bring the map of Electrify America stations up to date and include new filtering and routing options. Additionally, details about each charging station, such as its charging speed, will now be provided so that drivers can easily locate DC fast chargers.
  • A new feature called Auto Hold will be added after installing the update. Whenever the ID.4 is brought to a complete stop, the Auto Hold feature kicks in and holds the vehicle in position when pressure is removed from the brake. However, drivers who prefer the car roll forward when the brake is released can deactivate the Auto Hold feature.

And How to Find a Volkswagen Jetta for Sale Near You in Houston

The first quarter of any new year is always exciting because it means that Volkswagen is rolling out a slew of game-changing new vehicles in virtually every category. In the electric vehicle category, the 2023 VW ID.4 is primed to continue making waves by setting a new bar of quality in what drivers can expect out of an EV. Meanwhile, the 2023 VW Atlas and VW Atlas Cross Sport are already wowing drivers and reviewers alike for their performance, design, and cargo capacity.

However, we’d be remiss if we didn’t take a deep dive into a couple of our flagship sedans. We’re referring, of course, to the 2023 VW Jetta and the 2023 VW Jetta GLI. Similar to the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, these two sedans are sometimes confused with one another because they share the same namesake.

To give some clarity, we’ll break down what makes the 2023 VW Jetta GLI distinct from the standard edition. After that, we will provide info on where you can find a Volkswagen Jetta for sale near you and how to arrange a test drive.

Sizing Up the 2023 VW Jetta Against the 2023 VW Jetta GLI

The standard edition of the VW Jetta has always been known for its reliability and cost of ownership. In fact, it has long held the reputation of providing drivers with the very best fuel economy and lowest sticker price out of any VW vehicle.

For the 2023 edition of the VW Jetta, you can count on that tradition carrying on. The new Jetta has a starting MSRP of $20,655 for the entry-level trim and provides drivers with 29 miles per gallon in the city and 42 miles per gallon on the highway, making it one of the most fuel-efficient sedans in its class. The 2023 is a Consumer Reports recommended vehicle, scoring high in the areas of fuel economy, ride, transmission, braking, noise, controls, cabin room, and usability. Overall, it’s a great car for the driver who values cost of ownership and reliability.

By comparison, the VW Jetta GLI holds style and performance in higher regard than the standard Jetta. Its elevated interior and exterior design incorporates the signature red trim made famous by the VW Golf GTI, resulting in a sedan that’s sophisticated with a big-time intimidation factor. Outfitted with a 2.0L turbo 6-speed manual transmission, the VW Jetta GLI delivers 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It’s by far and away the more powerful of the two sedans.

Additionally, the VW Jetta GLI Autobahn trim comes with several features not included with the VW Jetta entry level trim package. They include:

  • Air Care® Climatronic 2 zone automatic climate control with enhanced air filter with activated carbon
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • BeatsAudio®
  • Composition Media touchscreen sound system with 8″ color display, proximity sensor, AM/FM/HD radio and voice control
  • LED projector headlights with LED daytime running lights
  • Power tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof
  • Rain-sensing, variable intermittent front wipers
  • Heated front seats with leather seating surfaces and ventilation
  • Leather-wrapped multifunction sports steering wheel
  • Power driver seat with memory
  • Multimode DCC® and adaptive chassis control
  • Variable ratio electromechanical power steering
  • Keyless access with push-button start
  • Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro: 10.25″ configurable digital instrument display

However, the boosted performance and feature package comes at a price. The VW Jetta GLI has a starting MSRP of $31,585. Although your car payment will be a little bit more, you won’t regret it once you have all that power, performance, and additional features at hand.

Of course, no matter which VW Jetta you decide to go with, your new vehicle will come with one of America’s leading warranties – Carefree Coverage. It is a suite of coverages and features that help keep your new VW Jetta in pristine condition. It breaks down as follows:

  • 2 yrs. Service – Scheduled Carefree Maintenance (2 years or 20,000 miles)

  • 4 yrs. Coverage – New Vehicle Limited Warranty (4 years or 50,000 miles)
  • 5 yrs. Access – myVW Remote Access

The next time you bring your Jetta in for VW service near you, Carefree Coverage will pop up in your records, making the process simple and easy.

electric vehicle mileage

A Breakdown of the Factors That Impact Your Volkswagen EV

Last year’s drastic increase in gas prices motivated many car owners to explore their options. For some, that meant switching over to a vehicle that prioritized fuel economy, such as the Volkswagen Jetta (29 mpg city/42 highway). For others, that meant looking into vehicles that don’t depend on gasoline, which is exactly where the VW ID.4 comes into play.

The Pro model of this Volkswagen EV SUV gets up to 275 miles on a single charge. However, that 275-mile figure is predicated on the ID.4 operating in the most ideal conditions. When it comes to the new Volkswagen electric car – any electric car, for that matter – there are several variables that affect its overall range.

To provide some clarity, we’ll break down the main things that impact driving range on an EV. Keep in mind, the following variables affect all electric cars – not just Volkswagen EVs.

#1 – Charge Status

This first one is rather obvious, but we’ll cover it anyway. The percentage of charge your Volkswagen EV has left directly correlates with mileage. However, some EV manufacturers limit how much the battery can be charged for sustainability purposes. You may never get your charge percentage above 90 or 95 for the sake of prolonging your battery’s lifespan.

#2 – Age of Battery

If you have an older cell phone, you may have noticed that it doesn’t hold a charge quite like it used to. The same holds true for electric vehicles. The older a battery gets, the lower its max charge capacity becomes. However, this is a slow process. Recent data on the subject estimates that EV battery cells only degrade by about 2 percent per year.

It’s also worth noting that electric vehicle batteries are under a federally mandated warranty for 100,000 miles/eight years. So, if you’re considering a new Volkswagen electric car, just know that your battery is fully covered should it not live up to performance expectations.

#3 – Weather

Weather is another variable that can negatively affect the battery of a Volkswagen EV. Specifically, extremely cold weather. The reason behind that is because an EV battery’s ability to hold a charge is impacted by cold temperatures. The other reason is that cold temperatures generally mean drivers are drawing additional power from the battery to warm up the cabin. Be especially mindful of your charge if you ever plan any cold weather road trips.

It’s also worth noting that cold temperatures affect gas mileage on traditional cars. According to recent statistics shared by Energy.gov, fuel economy is reduced by roughly 15 percent when driving in extremely cold temperatures.

#4 – Driving Speed

Traditional vehicles that run on gas get better mileage on the highway compared to city driving. The new Volkswagen electric car and other EVs are the opposite. They are better suited for stop-and-go traffic because they regeneratively brake, which means kinetic energy is converted to electricity when braking. This means that city drivers are going to get the maximum output of their EV battery.
